Earth Hour Philippines 2019 Shines A Light On Plastic Pollution

On the second year of the global #Connect2Earth theme of Earth Hour that calls for the urgent need to care for the Earth’s biological diversity, World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Philippines continues to focus on the issue of single-use plastics and how addressing it can help reverse the loss of nature.

Now on its 12th year, Earth Hour is considered as the world’s largest grassroots movement for the environment. What started out as a campaign to engage people and create significant environmental action against climate change has evolved into a platform that aims to raise awareness on the importance of biodiversity as a viable resource link that families, communities, nations, and future generations all depend upon.

“The last decade of Earth Hour has contributed so much to the global climate agenda and has paved the way for many conservation wins. Now that we are ushering in the second year of the movement’s new decade, our efforts will still be centered on raising awareness and inspiring action on conserving nature and biodiversity to counter the worsening impacts of climate change,” says WWF-Philippines Head of Climate and Energy Program and Earth Hour Pilipinas National Director Atty. Gia Ibay.

When #Connect2Earth was launched last year, more than 17,900 landmarks and monuments in over 180 countries and territories switched off their lights to show their commitment to and support for raising awareness and inspiring action on conserving nature and biodiversity.  Both #Connect2Earth and #EarthHour trended in 33 countries and garnered more than 3.5 billion impressions worldwide.  With these numbers, Earth Hour 2019 is an unmissable opportunity to create an unstoppable movement for nature and WWF-Philippines is anchoring this year’s celebration on single-use plastics, one of the biggest threats to biodiversity.

Leveraging on the momentum of its #AyokoNgPlastik movement, WWF-Philippines hopes to further create awareness on the dangers of single-use plastics, spark conversations, change mindsets and habits of consumers, urge businesses to operate more sustainably, and influence policy. Adopting the WWF network’s “No Plastics in Nature” Initiative, WWF-Philippines believes that Earth Hour 2019 is the best way to send out a clear message to take a stand against plastic pollution towards its ultimate goal of mobilizing public support for legislations on plastic waste management.

“The Philippines is the 3rd major plastic polluter of oceans in the world and we, Filipinos, must unite and create concrete steps to stop this worsening situation. We have to realize how nature is vitally important in our daily lives and preventing single-use plastics from entering nature is a big step towards a greener, more sustainable planet,” states WWF-Philippines President and CEO Joel Palma as he reiterates the importance of working together to achieve a long-term solution to this environmental problem that significantly contributes to nature loss.

The kick-off event of Earth Hour 2019 that was held on February 28, 2019 in the Magellan Function Room of the Discovery Suites in Ortigas saw commitments for nature formalized and renewed as the Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP) inked a memorandum of agreement with WWF-Philippines and National Ambassadors Rovilson Fernandez and Iza Calzado, as well as National Youth Ambassador Janine Gutierrez, renewed their contracts to reaffirm their declaration of support to conserve natural assets to ensure a living planet for future generations.

The main switch-off event of Earth Hour 2019 is slated on March 30, Saturday, at the Globe Circuit Event Grounds in Makati from 5:00 PM to 10:00PM, with the actual switch-off at 8:30 PM. At least 3,000 scouts will be deployed to the public event that will feature booths, activities, and performances that will honor the planet. Meanwhile, everyone from all over the Philippines is also encouraged to switch off non-essential lights from 8:30PM to 9:30PM in solidarity with millions around the world who will do the same.

Using this year’s official hashtags #Connect2Earth, #EarthHourPH2019, and #AyokoNgPlastik, WWF-Philippines is encouraging everyone to harness the power of social media and help share their commitment to start changing the planet for the better by sharing stories and photos of their sustainable living actions, as well as their pledges to say no to single-use plastics, via Earth Hour Philippines’ Facebook event page – http://bit.ly/EarthHourPH2019 that will go live by March 1, 2019.

To engage in conversations on plastics, join facebook.com/groups/ayokongplastik.

Tanduay’s Roots is PH’s First Economic History Museum

The country’s first Museum of Philippine Economic History has recently opened in what was once the Ynchausti Commercial House in Calle RealIloilo.

The country’s first Museum of Philippine Economic History has recently opened in what was once the Ynchausti Commercial House in Calle Real in Iloilo, home of the company that started what will eventually become the world’s number one Rhum, Tanduay.

Before the National Historical Commission restored the building into an economic history museum, it was used as the provincial offices of the Commission on Audit. For the longest time, however, it was known as the Elizalde building.

In 1854, according to local historians, the building was home to a conglomerate Ynchausti y Compania (also Ynchausti y Cia), whose founders were the basques José Joaquin Ynchausti, Joaquin Elizalde and Valentin Teus. They consolidated their companies’ assets including Tanduay. When the Elizaldes bought the Ynchausti shares in 1934, they renamed the company to Elizalde Y Cia.

Other than historical data, the museum showcases many of the important artifacts of companies that thrived in Iloilo, especially during the golden days of the sugar industry. Aside from being one of the oldest companies established in the country, the Tanduay Distillery was featured in the museum because of its huge contribution to the sugarcane industry.

There's a display of an old Tanduay dama juana; early advertising print ads of Tanduay; tools from the haciendas of Western Visayas' sugar plantations; looms from the oldest weavers in Miagao, Iloilo; and t'nalak cloth from South Cotabato, among many others.

It is appropriate that these items are housed at the Ynchausti Commercial House, which was built in 1905 and used as a trading store. Like most Spanish colonial houses in the country, it is the typical bahay-na-bato with solid red-brick walls on the first floor and wood panels on the second floor. It also has wide Capiz-shell windows that are a distinct design of old Spanish houses.

“Tanduay has a rich history that started in the island of Negros. As we celebrate the 165th year of Tanduay Distillers this year, we would like to ensure that Tanduay will  always be remembered, especially by the next of generations of Filipinos,” said Lucio K. Tan, Jr., president and chief operating officer, Tanduay Distillers, Inc.

Incidentally, as part of its anniversary celebration, the Lucio Tan Group-owned Tanduay Distillers, Inc has embarked on the conversion of its distillery in Manila into a museum that will showcase its rich and colorful history. It will likewise give its visitors a multi-sensory experience on how its products are made.

“The Tanduay Museum will be housed at our old office in Quiapo, where Ynchausti Y Cia operated their liquor facility. We plan to restore part of the original building, but since it will be a brand museum, expect that it will have a modern façade and will utilize technology at par with the world’s contemporary museums,” Tan, Jr. revealed.

5 Things Filipino Moms Worry About

Motherhood is an amazing feat. We look at a mom and wonder - how does she do it? Although the casual observer sees Wonder Woman, the Queen of Multitasking, we often miss what they do not let us see: their internal struggles and daily worries.

Lamoiyan Corporation’s Licealiz Head Lice Treatment shampoo reached out to mommy netizens (mothers who are active online or keep a blog to chronicle their motherhood journey) to find out the biggest concerns Filipino moms may have today.

The tribulations of motherhood

Being a mom is definitely not a walk in the park. Mommy Iris of the online blog Pinay Ads shares that as a first-time mom, she was worried about how to do everything properly. She says, “My worry is if I can do it (motherhood), especially as there are no books to guide us. You can’t really learn it properly until the baby arrives. (Ang worry ko is if I can do it, kasi syempre there are no books naman. Hindi mo naman mapag-aaralan agad unless andyan na talaga yung baby). Both she and Mommy Gracie of Tipid Mommy agree that research is a good way to overcome this. “It helps a lot to read online articles, learn from experienced moms and from mom friends, both online and offline,” shares Mommy Gracie.

Raising well-rounded kids

All moms want their children to grow up as model citizens. Mommy Donna of Everyday Adventures wants her son Jayden to learn the value of excellence. “I know that I myself am a hardworking person, so I want him to grow up the same way (Kasi ako, alam ko sa sarili ko na I’m a hardworking person, so gusto ko ganun din siya paglaki),” she emphasizes. She also wants him to learn how to treat people kindly and be gentle to all kinds of people.

Academic pressures

The first day of school is not just nerve-wracking for the kids, but for the parents as well. For Mommy Gracie, the first time her son, Zee, entered school, she and her husband were worried about how he would do. But as she saw how much he flourished in his learning environment, she felt a little more at ease. As for Mommy Iris, whose daughter Sammy is three years old, she shares that finding the balance between learning and play is important. “At our house, when we play, there’s still learning. For example, colors, numbers, (Dito naman sa house ‘pag naglalaro kami, mayroon pa ‘ring halong learning. Kunware colors, numbers),” she recalls.

Interacting with other kids

As children grow older, the more they feel inclined to playing outside, exploring, and meeting other kids.  Sometimes, these interactions affect the children’s character, which is why Mommy Adae of Adae to Remember worries that her daughter Abby will meet kids who could be a bad influence to her. She says that a way to overcome this is to talk to the kids and tell them right away that what they are saying or doing is wrong. This is a sentiment that Mommy Reylen from Made it Through Mum also resonates with, especially if she feels that her kids will imitate children who disrespect their parents. “But I’m not that scared,” she admits. “Here in our household, they know how to respect others (Pero hindi naman ako ganun katakot. Kasi dito sa bahay, alam naman nila. Sanay silang rumespeto sa iba).”

Health risks

Like any mother, Mommy Mhaan of the blog Mommy Rockin’ in Style is always worried that her son, Cloud, is not getting the sufficient health resources he needs. When kids go out to play, the chances for exposure to various diseases increase. Mommy Mhaan is afraid that Cloud will get injured or contract diseases like dengue, flu, or head lice. “I’m doing my best, but sickness is inevitable,” she laments. She says that it is important to use the right products and take the right steps to easily reduce the health risks that the children are exposed to.

Head lice is one of the many unforeseen health risks that children can obtain. Licealiz Head Lice Treatment Shampoo is the perfect solution to eliminate both head lice and your worries. It is recommended to use Licealiz Head Lice Treatment Shampoo twice a week for two weeks for treatment of head lice.

4 quick and easy desserts from Maya that don’t require a stove or oven

Preparing delicious desserts can be a daunting task especially if you’re a novice in the kitchen. No worries though, it’s now easier to whip up top class desserts with Maya – and without a stove or oven to boot!

From fluffy mug cakes and muffins, to fruity cold treats, make good use of these four quick recipes to put impressive desserts on the table for your whole family.
Join the Mango Graham craze with Maya Happy Mug Cake mix. Skip the long lines in different malls and create your own Mango Graham Mug Cake at home. Simply combine a pack of MAYA Happy Mug Caramel Mug Cake Mix with mango juice in a mug, put it in the microwave for one minute and 30 seconds, then top with chopped fresh mangoes, graham crackers, and whipped cream — and voila, your dessert is ready!

Enjoy your favorite sweet treats all in one serving. If you’re craving for chocolate and cheesecake, then this No Bake Chocolate Hotcake Cheesecake will surely hit the spot, and it’s so easy to make. Prepare cream cheese filling by beating cream cheese with sugar in a bowl. Place a cooked chocolate hotcake (made with MAYA Chocolate Hotcake Mix) in a pan and pour enough cream cheese filling on top. Repeat this step to make layers, ending with a hotcake as the topmost layer. Leave it in the fridge for a few hours to set and finish up by coating the entire cheesecake with dark chocolate ganache.

Beat the heat with this Homemade Bluebery Lime Ice Cream.  If you don’t want to bring store-bought dessert to your next potluck party, but don’t have the confidence to try an elaborate recipe, just make Homemade Blueberry Lime Ice Cream. Beat heavy whipped cream until it peaks, and mix condensed milk, lime zest, and lime juice in a bowl. Blend the lime-milk mixture with the whipped cream, then add blueberry filling and lightly mix until it creates swirls. Freeze for at least 6 hours or overnight to give everyone a refreshing treat.

Peanut Butter and Jelly Muffins make snack time more exciting. Give muffins a twist with the classic combination of peanut butter and jelly. Mix Maya Oven Toaster Butter Cake Mix with peanut butter in a bowl and beat until soft. Add in eggs and milk, and blend until everything is well incorporated. Fold in half of your favorite strawberry jam in the mixture, pour in prepared muffin pans, and bake in the oven toaster or steamer. Top the muffins with rest of the jam and enjoy your dessert in 15 minutes or less!
