Brewing Greatness: Michael Harris Conlin Wins Big at National Barista Championship


Michael Harris Conlin Clinches 2025 Philippine Barista Title, Showcasing Filipino Coffee Talent Worldwide.

Michael Harris Conlin, a long-time advocate for Philippine coffee and social entrepreneurship, has been named the 2025 Philippine National Barista Champion, following his standout performance at the Philippine Barista Competition held recently at MAFBEX. His victory not only marks a personal milestone, but also reaffirms his mission: to build a beautiful coffee future by elevating Philippine coffee —  through connection, unity, and bold innovation.


With this win, Conlin will represent the Philippines at the World Barista Championship, to be held at HostMilano in Milan, Italy from October 17 to 21, 2025.


This will be Conlin’s second time competing on the world stage. In 2019, he made history as the first Filipino barista to reach the semi-finals of the World Barista Championship in Boston, USA, placing 15th in the world — a groundbreaking achievement that broke the glass wall and opened the path for more Filipino baristas to follow.


This year, his goal is even higher: to reach the global top 6 — and to bring home the World Barista Championship title to the Philippines for the first time.


Known for his deep commitment to uplifting Filipino coffee farmers and creating sustainable, community-driven impact through his ventures, Conlin’s championship routine centered on the theme of “connection.” It was a compelling message woven through coffee, community, and co-creation — demonstrating that truly exceptional coffee is not a solo achievement, but a collective triumph across the value chain.


“This win isn’t just mine,” Conlin shared. “It belongs to the farmers, the roasters, the scientists, the baristas, and the dreamers who all worked together to create something extraordinary. Coffee is about co-creation — and that’s what we’re celebrating.”


At the heart of his presentation was a championship blend of Philippine Liberica (Barako) from Laguna and Colombian Mokka, developed through months of experimentation and collaboration with world-renowned Colombian producer Wilton Benitez. Century Tuna welcomes back Mt. Everest summiteer Jeno Panganiban

Century Tuna officially celebrates the return of mountaineer and Superbod athlete Jeno Panganiban to the Philippines after successfully reaching the top of Mount Everest, the world’s highest summit.

He transitioned from a former software engineer, working a 9-to-5 job, to owning a distribution business, supplying healthy produce to restaurants across Metro Manila, which has given him the flexibility to control his own time. 


When he set his sights to finally achieving his long-time dream of conquering Mount Everest, Jeno knew that it required singular focus and relentless drive. It wasn’t only about rallying together all his previous mountaineering experiences. It was also about actively choosing to go through extreme preparation and intentionally nourishing his body with the right nutrition that can push him to become one of the Philippines’ national prides.


From high altitude sickness, hazardous weather, to the looming threat of avalanches, Jeno persisted through the life-threatening challenges. He endured temperatures reaching below freezing, extreme sun exposure burning, and loss of oxygen as he was reaching the summit while pushing through exhaustion. 


“You have to be comfortable in being uncomfortable,” says Jeno. “So every day, we made sure that our bodies were in the right condition. I made sure my body and mind were ready for the push.”

Make-A-Wish® Partners with GMG Productions’ “Come From Away” to Support Children with Critical Illnesses

Nonprofit organization Make-A-Wish® Philippines has partnered with GMG Productions for a special fundraising performance that aims to grant life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. Through a local production of the award-winning Broadway musical, “Come From Away,” the partnership aims to bring a lifetime of hope to children in need with this special night of entertainment.


Based on real events, “Come From Away” is set in the small town of Gander, Newfoundland, where 38 planes carrying 7,000 passengers were grounded right after the September 11 attacks. Despite growing tension in the country, the local townsfolk offered their homes and hospitality to the stranded strangers, welcoming them as neighbors in their time of need.


In real life, one of the grounded planes was a Make-A-Wish flight, carrying children with critical illnesses and their families on the way to Disney World, Florida. Due to the postponement of the much-anticipated trip, the town came together to throw a party for the children, complete with mascots, music, cakes and clowns. This is just one of many stories from Gander that inspired the musical, showing how kindness can help change people's lives.


Under the direction of Michael Williams, “Come From Away” has been adapted to a local audience, celebrating the power of community and generosity. And with its upcoming staging on June 27 at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater in Circuit Makati, limited tickets will be available for the VIP section, with proceeds going towards bringing hope, strength and joy to the children who need it most.

This is how diabetes can impact your body from head to toe


Experts refer to diabetes as a “silent killer”—an ominous label, for sure, but definitely not an exaggeration. Caused by chronic high blood sugar due to the inability of the body to use or produce insulin (the hormone that converts food to energy), diabetes can have no obvious symptoms for many years. When signs do appear, however, they put you at risk for certain diseases or leave you with irreparable damage. 


“Diabetes impacts our body literally from head to toe,” says Jimmy B. Aragon, MD from the Diabetes Care Center of top hospital in the Philippines Makati Medical Center (MakatiMed). “That’s why we always advocate for early detection, so treatment can begin before the effects become irreversible.”


Long-term exposure to blood sugar damages our blood vessels, which leads to a host of complications, some of them life-threatening: 


Cardiovascular disease. “People with diabetes are more at risk of getting a stroke and heart attack,” reveals Dr. Aragon. “Damaged blood vessels become stiff and develop plaque, hampering oxygen and blood flow to vital organs like the brain and heart.”


Visual problems. “Damaged blood vessels in the eyes can lead to diabetic retinopathy, a condition that blurs vision and could progress to blindness,” shares Dr. Aragon. “Cataracts or a cloudiness in your eye’s lens and glaucoma or the damage of an optic nerve are also traced to diabetes.” 


Kidney disease. “When high blood sugar damages the tiny blood vessels and filters of the kidneys, it impairs the kidneys’ ability to filter out toxic waste from our system,” says Dr. Aragon. “The kidneys’ impaired function may eventually lead to dialysis or a kidney transplant.” 


Neuropathy. Nerve damage due to high blood sugar usually presents itself in the legs and feet. “The sensation is one of pins and needles,” explains Dr. Aragon. “It could also manifest as numbness, and the loss of feeling makes you unaware of injuries on your feet.” People with diabetes are also known for their slow-healing wounds in the feet—a result, yet again, of damaged blood vessels and poor circulation. 


A frequent need to pee, dry skin, fatigue, and unquenchable thirst are other signs of diabetes. 


Managing blood sugar is the first step to controlling diabetes. “The two most common tests to check for diabetes are Fasting Blood Sugar and HbA1c,” says Dr. Aragon. “The former measures blood sugar after eight hours of fasting, the latter measures your average blood sugar levels in the last 2-3 months.” Type 2 diabetes (wherein the body cannot make insulin or is resistant to it) is the more common form of disease, while type 1 diabetes (an autoimmune disorder that attacks the cells that make insulin) is usually diagnosed in children and young adults. 


Aim for a normal fasting blood sugar between 70 and 100 mg/dl (or (3.9 and 5.6 mmol/L). “You’re considered prediabetes if your blood sugar runs from 100 to 125 mg/dL (5.6 to 6.9 mmol/L). A result of 126 mg/dL (7 mmol/L) or higher means you have diabetes,” reminds Dr. Aragon.


Medications are available to either lower blood sugar levels or aid the body in using insulin more effectively. MakatiMed also shares some simple lifestyle changes to keep blood sugar within normal levels. 


Dr. Aragon advises replacing carbs with low-glycemic whole grains and fiber, and hydrating with water, not sugary drinks, to manage blood sugar. The doctor also recommends staying active. Even a 30-minute walk after meals helps lower blood sugar and aids weight loss for better overall health. 


Given that people with diabetes have an increased risk of developing serious foot problems, Dr. Aragon stresses moisturizing and cleaning feet, and wearing socks to prevent sores. Diabetes also affects many of our organs, so the expert emphasizes the importance of monitoring any changes not only with your blood sugar but with your eyes, kidneys, blood pressure, and cholesterol. 


“Diabetes doesn’t have to be your ‘silent killer,’” asserts Dr. Aragon. “With your doctor’s guidance and your compliance, you can live a full and active life and do what non-diabetics can do, within healthy limits, of course.”

Conservationists Gather Nationwide to Celebrate Philippine Eagle Week 2025

Davao City, The Philippines - The Philippine Eagle Week (PEW) 2025 has capped off a week-long celebration of the country’s national bird with powerful messages of unity, environmental education, and inclusive conservation. Anchored on the theme “Soaring Together: Empowering Communities, Educating Minds, and Protecting the Philippine Eagle,” this year’s PEW brought together communities, youth, indigenous peoples, and partner institutions from across the country to renew their commitment to saving the critically endangered Philippine eagle and the forests it calls home.


Spearheaded by the Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF) in collaboration with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Biodiversity Management Bureau (BMB), the annual observance featured activities in Luzon and Mindanao that educated the public, engaged local leaders, and mobilized collective action.


Celebrating Where It All Began: Philippine Eagle Center in Davao City


The week-long celebration opened at the Philippine Eagle Center (PEC) in Malagos, Davao City, the heart of Philippine eagle conservation and home to the country’s leading captive breeding and education programs. The Center welcomed hundreds of visitors daily for a series of educational and experiential activities.


Guests, including students, educators, families, and local leaders, participated in guided exhibit tours, conservation-themed workshops, and short film screenings. Volunteers and PEF staff facilitated discussions around the biology, threats, and recovery efforts for the Philippine eagle.

A Historic Milestone for Luzon: SM City Cabanatuan Leg



Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF) addresses attendees of the Philippine Eagle Week 2025 Launch – Luzon Leg.


For the first time, Philippine Eagle Week was celebrated in Nueva Ecija, Luzon, considering the historic sighting of a Philippine eagle in the Central Sierra Madre Mountain range. In partnership with SM City Cabanatuan, PEF launched an inspiring public event that marked the Philippine eagle’s growing significance in Northern Luzon.


“The Philippine eagle soars as a gigantic guardian of our forests and a symbol of our national pride and heritage, and this majestic raptor becomes an indicator of the health condition of our forests and ecosystem, where the biodiversity will flourish and our eagles will thrive when forests are more alive,” said Mr. Gerundio Fernandez, Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer of Nueva Ecija.


The centerpiece of the celebration was a Philippine Eagle Art Exhibit at the mall atrium, featuring student artworks and illustrations inspired by the eagle and its forest habitat. The exhibit became a gathering point for local families and mallgoers to learn about the eagle’s ecology and symbolic role in forest protection.

PEF’s Executive Director, Mr. Dennis Salvador, stressed the greater impact of observing Philippine Eagle Week in Luzon: “This is a historic moment for conservation in Luzon. The recent sighting of the Philippine eagle here affirms that our forests still hold hope—and with it, a responsibility. Let this not be a fleeting celebration, but a long-term commitment to protect what remains and rebuild what we have lost. The eagle’s presence is not just a discovery; it is a call to act.

The celebration in Cabanatuan underscored the need to extend conservation efforts beyond Mindanao and into Luzon, where recent eagle sightings call for increased forest protection, research, and community engagement.

Down south, the celebration took flight in Davao City, the home of the Philippine Eagle Foundation, with a vibrant three-day gathering at SM City Davao Annex Event Area. The event, co-organized by PEF and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), brought together hundreds of participants—including Indigenous leaders, conservationists, educators, youth, and volunteers—in a powerful demonstration of community-driven conservation.


“The Philippine eagle cannot survive without our forests—and our forests cannot thrive without our united action,” shared Dr. Franklyn Buenaflor, Chief of the Conservation and Development Division of DENR XI.


Exhibits and knowledge-sharing talks featured prominently throughout the week. Visitors engaged with interactive installations that explored eagle biology, conservation breeding, and field stories from Indigenous communities.


Special attention was given to the experiences of the Obu Manuvu (Barangay Tambobong) and Sumpaw Nang Magkatikadung Sang Maragusan communities, who have played key roles in recent eagle discoveries. Their testimonials reinforced the indispensable role of Indigenous knowledge in eagle habitat protection.


A Celebration Made Possible Through Partnerships


The success of the Davao celebration was made possible through the support of key partners, including Inlife Foundation, Ulticon Builders Incorporated, the Eastern Mindanao Biodiversity Corridor (EMBC) Project, Lakpue Drug Incorporated, Arellano University, Bank of the Philippine Islands, FDC Utilities, Inc., and the City Government of Davao.


The Philippine Eagle Foundation has also partnered with the interregional communications group COMCO Mundo League of Enterprises through the consortium's Citizen COMCO advocacy movement, which champions environmental conservation, among others. The partnership aims to amplify the PEF message and efforts in integrating wildlife protection into forest and nature conservation. 


As the week-long celebration draws to a close, the Philippine Eagle Foundation renews its call: that all Filipinos—across islands and institutions—continue to soar together in defense of the national bird, and the forests that give life to us all.
