BEKO : Healthy eating tips for the whole family

Making sure that the family sticks to a well-balanced, healthy diet is not always easy, especially when trying to fit a busy schedule and raising kids.

However, don’t get discouraged just yet. Integrating small changes in your family’s routine can lead to better health outcomes. To get started, Beko Philippines, empowering new generations to live healthier, listed some tips to help improve your family’s diet.

Pack your own snacks

sure to go for the healthy option whether you’re preparing a snack for yourself at work or for your kids at school. you can replace unhealthy food grubs with nuts, like almonds, hazelnuts, or pecans, which make for a healthy snack. You can also cut fruits in small cubes for easy snacking.

Packing a healthy snack before heading out is a great way of reducing your family’s sugar and sodium consumption.

Get your kids involved in the kitchen

Cooking with your children not only help them get excited about eating but, is also a good chance for them to eat healthier food choices. Giving your kids food options is also an excellent means to ensure that they eat healthy since it allows them to have a hand in choosing what they want. However, don’t forget to give them tasks that are tailored to their age and ability.

Create a meal plan every week

Instead of squandering your time every day thinking about new recipes, why not prepare it in advance? It not only helps you save money, but it also makes sticking to your diet significantly easier since you have control of what goes into your meal. In creating a meal plan every week, make sure to buy fresh ingredients.

Storing your food properly is pivotal in keeping your family healthy. To ensure that your food products are always fresh, consider using RCNT415E50VZWB, 14.6 cubic feet, Inverter refrigerator by Beko Philippines.

This refrigerator has an EverFresh+® technology, which is perfect for those diet-delayers. It allows unused fruit and vegetables to sit comfortably in a special crisper compartment for up to 30 days.

The RCNT415E50VZWB also comes with a Beko ProSmart™ Inverter Compressor so you can open the door of the fridge for a good nose inside, as well as adapt and create fewer temperature variations to cool your food quickly.

Meanwhile, its NeoFrost™ dual cooling technology helps to maintain high humidity in the fridge, while keeping the freezer dry, frozen and frost-free. Coupled with two times faster cooling, this system retains moisture for longer it. And, with two separate fans, there are no nasty odor transfers between the fridge and freezer compartments. Its IonGuard® technology also helps remove odors in your fridge by circulating negative ions that neutralize bacteria and particles that cause odors.

Lastly, its Beko Active Fresh Blue Light™ technology protects vitamin C intensity in vegetables and keep the natural flavors and nutritional elements in your healthy food intact.

New Zealand Barley Grass: What makes it so good?

Barley grass has long been considered an important ‘functional food’ that promotes health and supports disease prevention. For many years it has been a foundation part of the health and wellness industry and is widely used by health-conscious consumers around the world. This ‘superfood’ contains high levels of chlorophyll and is rich in vitamins, minerals, and enzymes. It is a powerhouse of nutrients.
The popularity of barley grass continues to grow as more and more consumers, worldwide, discover its benefits. At Santé New Zealand Limited, we recognize the powerful properties of barley grass and, its health benefits. This has led us to develop a comprehensive selection of everyday barley-based products.

Our Barley Grass Growing Region

Our barley grass is grown in the Canterbury region of New Zealand. Canterbury lies in the central-eastern region of the country’s South Island. This is an area of 44,508 square kms and is one of the most important agricultural and horticultural areas in the country. The soils of the Canterbury Plains are formed on an alluvial plain and are particularly well suited to growing cereal crops such as wheat, oats and barley.

Our region has a long history of growing barley, but this has been mainly for its grain. The barley grain is used in the brewing industry and in baked products.

Given the local expertise in growing these barley grain crops it has been an exciting innovation to partner with expert farmers to grow ‘barley grass’. This is the same barley plant, but it is grown, harvested and dried at the green leaf stage, well before the plant matures and develops the grain. Over time, we have developed optimal growing techniques and harvest to suit growing the barley plant for its leaf rather than for its grain.

The local Canterbury climate with its cool winters and warm summers, along with the free draining soils are very well suited to growing superior barley grass crops. We consider the crops of barley grass we grow to be truly outstanding in when it comes to chlorophyll and nutrient levels. Our barley grass crops are world class.

Certified Organic Production

More than simply growing the barley grass we grow it under a certified organic system. This is an independently audited system that ensures the barley grass is grown according to organic principles. The farms on which we grow the product are all certified organic and have been so for many years. This means our barley grass is grown without chemical pesticides or artificial fertilizers. Additionally, our region is considered one of the cleanest and least polluted regions of the globe. [1][2]

We grow our crops in a method called ‘broadacre’. This means the crops are grown in large paddocks (i.e. fields) often 10ha or more. In this method the barley grass receives natural sunlight, airflow and rain as the main water source. The soils these certified organic barley grass crops grow in are in a ‘rotation’ of animal grazing and cropping. This naturally balances inputs of nutrients (i.e. from the grazing animal’s manure and from legume plants) with the extraction of nutrients from cropping. Typically, the farm rotation may involve 3 years of animal grazing (sheep or cattle) and 3 years of growing a variety of crops including barley grass.

Ensuring the quality

The production of premium barley grass requires that the plant receives enough water (either via rainfall or irrigation), sufficient macro-nutrients along with enough magnesium, Sulphur and calcium from the soil. The macro-nutrients are nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) or NPK for short. Often the availability of the macro-nutrients to the barley plant is governed by the soil pH level, presence of micro-nutrients and the levels of organic matter in the soil.

Farming under organic principles is demanding as there are a limited number of ways the organic farmer can influence the availability of nutrients. This requires careful planning and great attention to the soil’s fertility and structure. Our farmers spend a great deal of time considering all aspects of what it takes it make a healthy soil including the soil microbiology and the presence of enough earthworms and other beneficial soil dwelling creatures. Application of certified organic compost and other approved fertilizers is a key part of maintaining fertility in the cropping phase.

An important part of the crop husbandry is to prepare a fine seedbed when the barley seeds are sown. Generally, barley grows to about 30 cm high before it is harvested with and specially designed harvester. Time to harvest depends on the time of year – it takes longer in the colder autumn months of the year.

It is important that, at harvest, the leaf is cut and delivered to the dryer as quickly as possible since it can’t be kept in a heap too long. The drying process is designed to reduce the moisture content and stabilize the barley leaf as a safe and nutritious food product.

Milling the barley leaf is an art and a science.  Well-milled barley leaf can be easily absorbed by the body and is a perfect ingredient for drinks and smoothies.

Respecting the land

Santé New Zealand Limited knows that the way we produce our crops impacts the health and purity of the environment. We are extremely mindful to grow according to organic principles and strive to leave the environment better than we found it.

The farms are certified organic by BioGro Ltd, one of two government approved certifiers of organic production and products in New Zealand. BioGro auditors ensure that our products and systems conform to their standards which include paying attention to the health of the ecosystems in and around our farms,

As BioGro-certified producers, the products developed from our barley can carry the BioGro logo. This helps our customers know that the product they buy is genuine and has been grown under organic principles. Additionally, our products come from a system in New Zealand where there is no genetic modification allowed.

LICEALIZ : This Summer, Prepare Your Kids for the Great Outdoors!

Most kids today grew up dependent on technology. Mobile phones, tablets, laptops, television, and other gadgets have and will always be a part of their childhood and lifestyle. However, this does not mean that we cannot let them experience the joys of riding a bike, playing tag, and lots of other activities that kids used to love doing outdoors, especially during the summer break.

While it is important to let your kids have fun under the sun, certain precautions must still be set to ensure that they are safe from harm and discomfort. Licealiz Head Lice Treatment Shampoo, together with several moms from various walks of life shared tips on how to arm their kids for a fun and safe day outdoors!

Protecting them from environmental risks

The outdoors can also cause harm to your kid if you do not take safety measures to avoid possible natural risks. “Of course, I worry that they could get diseases especially with the recent measles outbreak, but thankfully my kids are vaccinated, and that takes away a lot of stress and worry for us,” says mommy of three and children’s book author Teresa Dumadag.

If your kids will run around in the afternoon, be sure to put sunblock to protect them from harmful UV rays and bring mosquito repellent to keep dengue-carrying mosquitoes away. Mommy Laila, co-founder of lifestyle brand Elements of Tomorrow and mom of one, also says that it is important to dress according to the weather: “We let our child, Sid Nayon, play freely in nature whether it’s sunny or rainy. So of course we dress him accordingly so he is well-protected.”

Preparing for emergencies

For Mommy Teresa, prevention is better than cure. Whenever she and her husband take their three boys to the park, she always makes sure they are ready for whatever accidents and emergencies that may occur. “Just recently, my eldest son fell while running and wounded his knee. Thankfully, we had wet wipes to clean the wound and found a restroom he could wash it in,” she shared.

Meanwhile, Mommy Kaye, a part-time working mom with a three-year-old, says that she already has a bag of essentials prepared for whenever she goes out with her son, Riley: “The contents of the backpack include a small towel, wipes, alcohol, mosquito repellent patches, a bottle of water and an extra shirt.” Being prepared for emergencies can also give you that peace of mind and will let you enjoy alongside your kid.

Teaching your kids proper hygiene

While putting several safety measures for your kids is important, nothing is more effective than teaching your kids to take care of themselves. Mommy Heart Calimlim, virtual assistant and freelance writer,  says that she makes sure to explain to her kids the importance of proper hygiene: “It’s for their own sake. Kung hindi ko sila tuturuan na alagaan sarili nila, baka ikapahamak pa nila at lalo silang magkasakit (It’s for their own sake. If I don’t teach them to take care of themselves, it will cause more harm and they’re more likely to catch diseases).”

Washing hands right after playing is also an effective way to avoid germs. According to Mommy Kaye, “There’s always a feeling of paranoia, if I may call it, because playing outside brings a lot of germs, especially now that he’s in a phase where he keeps on biting his nails.” This is why right after playing, one of the first things Mommy Kaye does is to make Riley wash his hands to avoid illnesses caused by these germs.

Keeping it consistent at home

To support her son’s active and adventurous personality, Mommy Laila believes that protecting him is a daily and consistent thing: “We see to it that our kid is healthy in terms of their food. We only feed him plant-based and organic food so that when he plays outside, he’s not prone to sickness and he has strength.” Promoting a healthy diet as well as regular vitamin intake can build up your child’s strength so that he is ready to face everything when he plays outdoors.

Your kid should not be the only one being protected, but also the whole family. Mommy Teresa shared, “There was a time when we had a maid who had lice. She was the one taking care of my son so he also got head lice and so we had to buy head lice shampoo for the both of them.” Shampoo specifically made for head lice infestation is the best treatment you can give to your child. In case of head lice infestation, use Licealiz Head Lice Treatment Shampoo twice a week for two weeks, and once a week for prevention of head lice recurrence. That way, your child is safe from head lice infestation, especially when they interact with other kids.

At the end of the day, it is always our child’s happiness that we care about. Mommy Heart shared, “Ever since we started letting our kids play outside, I always see them happy and they really look forward to play time.” Taking the time to spend a whole day of playing outdoors with your kids is also a great opportunity to bond and of course, there is no better way for parents to show their love for their kids than to spend quality time with them.

STATE OF WORLD POPULATION 2019 Unfinished Business: the pursuit of rights and choices for all

POPCOM Undersecretary Dr. Juan Antonio A. Perez III with UNFPA Philippines Representative Iori Kato at the turnover of the State of World Population 2019 Report, entitled “Unfinished Business: the pursuit of rights and choices for all”

The year 2019 is unique as it marks two important milestones in the field of sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights: 50 years since the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) began operations globally, and 25 years since the landmark International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Cairo where 179 governments agreed on a call for all people to have access to comprehensive reproductive health care, including voluntary family planning, and safe pregnancy and childbirth services. UNFPA’s State of World Population Report 2019 traces advances in reproductive health on the anniversaries of these two important milestones.

These two events—the launch of the first United Nations agency dedicated to addressing population dynamics and the reproductive health needs of the world’s people with Filipino national Rafael Salas as its first Executive Director, and the declaration of a global commitment to sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights—have fundamentally shaped the lives of women and families, and the societies in which they live, in the decades that followed.  The revolutionary changes have been made in measurable and immeasurable, profound and trivial, permanent and fleeting ways.

Activists, advocates, government agencies like the Philippine Commission on Population and Development (POPCOM) – which also celebrates its 50th anniversary this year - and UNFPA have jointly advanced the transformations that ordinary citizens see around themselves today and have helped tear down various and evolving social, economic and institutional barriers that women and young people have faced in exercising their reproductive rights over the past 50 years. As a result, more women today have access to the information and services they need to decide for themselves whether, when or how often to become pregnant.

Much has been achieved in the Philippines since 1969. The average number of births per woman was 6.0 in 1973.  Today it is 2.7[1], even though the country has the highest total fertility rate in the ASEAN region.  In order to reach the national target of 2.1 average number of births per woman under the Philippine Development Plan (PDP), the Philippines needs to step up its efforts.
“UNFPA takes pride in having partnered with the Philippines and witnessed together so many remarkable achievements together in the areas of sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights in the last five decades.  And yet, there should not be complacency.  Much more needs to be done to empower those who are not yet able to enjoy their rights and whose choices are still constrained,” says UNFPA Philippines Representative Iori Kato.

According to the 2017 Philippines National Demographic and Health Survey, about 17 percent of currently married women aged 15-49 have expressed intention to space or limit their children but are not using any method of family planning.  Such proportion of unmet need for family planning services is highest among adolescents at 28 percent.

The fulfillment of sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights is key to reducing poverty in the country. The PDP 2017-2022 contains a specific chapter on Reaching for the Demographic Dividend; this chapter emphasizes the fact that reducing fertility through increasing access for young people to reproductive health information and services is a necessary pre-condition for the demographic dividend to be realized.

The Philippine Government is a champion of the ICPD and President Rodrigo R. Duterte is committed to ending the unmet need for family planning, reflected in the recently revamped National Program on Population and Family Planning (NPPFP) to accelerate the full implementation of the Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive Health Act.

“The Philippine Government remains strong in its commitment to fulfill the promise of the International Conference on Population and Development Programme of Action, to put people at the center of sustainable development and to pursue the realization of every Filipino’s sexual and reproductive rights,” said Dr. Juan Antonio A. Perez III, Under-Secretary for Population and Development and Executive Director of POPCOM.

To finish the unfinished business of the ICPD, governments, activists and stakeholders will rally at the Nairobi Summit on ICPD25 to be held on 12-14 November to sustain the gains made so far, and fulfill the promise of the ICPD agenda. Most countries, including the Philippines, need to build on the foundation of the past achievements to reach those who have been left behind and make sexual and reproductive health and rights a reality for all.

Facts and figures on the Philippines:
  • Number of deaths of women from pregnancy-related causes per 100,000 live births: 121 in 1994; 114 in 2015 (SWOP, 2019)
  • Modern contraceptive prevalence rate among currently-married women: 11 in 1973; 25 in 1993; 40 in 2017 (NDS, 1993; NDHS, 2017)

  • Total fertility rate, or average number of births per women: 6.0 in 1973; 4.1 in 1993; 2.7 in 2017 (NDS, 1993; NDHS, 2017)
  • Percent women 15-19 years old who have begun childbearing: 6.5 in 1993; 8.6 in 2017 (NDS, 1993; NDHS, 2017)
