HERBALIFE NUTRITION : Digestive Health Relies on Healthy Diet, Lifestyle

Your digestive system is truly remarkable - and when you take a moment to think about how much it does for you, you might be more inclined to take better care of your digestive health. Your digestive system has a huge job - it breaks down the foods that you eat in order to make nutrients and energy available to the body, and it is responsible for steering unwanted waste out of the body, too. On top of that, your digestive tract is a key player in immunity, because the cells lining your digestive tract help protect your body against bacterial and viral invaders that could make you sick. And yet, many people abuse their digestive system – by filling it with highly processed foods, or eating too much, or eating too fast – and tend to pay little attention to it until something goes wrong.

The good news is that when provided with a healthy diet, the digestive tract is well-designed to take care of things naturally.

A nutrient-rich, balanced diet helps to nourish all of your body’s cells, including those in your digestive tract. So you’ll want to provide your system with plenty of fiber, and make sure that you get adequate fluids and plenty of exercise to help keep you regular. You’ll also want to ensure that you get a source of probiotics. These are beneficial bacteria found in certain foods that help maintain the proper balance of the microorganisms that live in your digestive tract.

Fiber
Fiber is the structural portion of a plant, and is found in whole fruits, vegetables, beans, and grains like oats and brown rice. Adults should be eating in the neighborhood of 30 grams a day, but the average grownup only eats about a third of that. Our busy lifestyles contribute to the problem - when we’re on the go, we’re less likely to eat the high fiber fruits, vegetables and whole grains that are more typically found at home.

Different types of fiber have different effects on the body, and it’s important to get plenty of fiber from a variety of sources. Some fibers – such as those found in foods like apples, oranges, potatoes, oats, barley, and beans – produce a feeling of fullness, while the fibers found in vegetables and whole grains help move food through the intestines, so they are particularly helpful in preventing constipation.

Fluids
Proper bowel function relies on adequate fluids to keep your system running smoothly. Fluid helps the fibers in foods to swell, which adds bulk to the stool and aids elimination. You also need water to produce saliva and digestive juices, and to transport nutrients to your cells, so taking in adequate fluids every day is vitally important to not only your digestive health, but your overall health, too. Aim for about 8 glasses of liquid daily - water and other calorie-free beverages are preferred (and yes, tea and coffee count towards your daily fluid intake).

Probiotics
Your digestive system houses tens of trillions of microorganisms, including a huge variety of species of bacteria. Taken together, these organisms are termed probiotics, and the entire colony is sometimes called the “gut microbiome”. These helpful bacteria serve a variety of functions. They help your body extract nutrients from your food, they help with the production of certain vitamins, and they protect the health of the digestive tract by keeping out dangerous foreign invaders. But this mini ecosystem residing in your gut may do even more – there is evidence that your gut microbiome may also influence your body weight, memory and mood, too, although it is too early to draw conclusions from the little research published so far.

Probiotics in your foods can help promote the right balance of the various bacteria residing in your digestive tract. (And, certain dietary fibers – called “prebiotics” serve as a food source to the beneficial bacteria). One of the most common strains of probiotic bacteria that reside in your intestines is Lactobacillus acidophilus, which is found in yogurt. Aside from yogurt, “good” bacteria are found in other fermented foods, such as fermented soy products (miso or tempeh) as well as pickled foods like cucumber pickles or fermented cabbage (sauerkraut or kimchi), as well as probiotic dietary supplements.

Exercise
Regular exercise supports digestive health in a couple of ways. As your muscles contract and your breath deepens during activity, the natural contractions of your intestinal muscles are stimulated, too, which helps to move food through your system. Exercise is also a well-known stress reducer, so it can help reduce digestive upsets that can occur in response to negative emotions. This connection between your gut and your brain is a suggests that keeping your digestive system in tip-top shape is vital to your sense of well-being.

Putting it All Together
The diet and lifestyle steps you take to keep yourself healthy are the same ones that promote digestive health, too. A diet that includes plenty of fiber from colorful fruits and vegetables and whole grains, adequate hydration, and regular exercise are all key factors. And don’t forget to drink plenty of fluids, and to include sources of probiotics in your daily diet. If you feel you can’t meet your fiber or probiotic needs, you can add a supplement to your diet. Lastly, take time to enjoy your meals. Slow, mindful eating won’t tax your system, and you’ll be less likely to experience the indigestion that often comes from eating too much, too fast.

ART & CULTURE ON-DEMAND WITH THE AYALA MUSEUM APP

Visiting a museum is one of our favorite things. Showing us the history and how things used to be. Like going back to its time, like time travelling. But the traffic in the city can be a big hindrance at times. That made most activities or businesses  opt to online transactions instead.

A good news! Continuing in its dedication to the modernization of the museum experience, Ayala Museum has now launched its own native app and becomes the first art & culture museum in the country to do so.

The Ayala Museum app acts as a digital museum for anyone anywhere, making it easier than ever to experience the best of Philippine art & culture whenever you want. The app gives users a glimpse into the museum’s permanent exhibitions: The Dioramas of Philippine History, Gold of Ancestors, A Millennium of Contact, and Art and the Order of Nature. What makes it even better is that the audio guides that supplement the collections are now available through the app for easy access.

Amazing how users can take a look into the museum’s current changing exhibitions, get updates on their latest events, programs, and other visitor information. More importantly, the app opens up access for everyone to their collections and programs with only a couple of clicks.

In another app-exclusive, Ayala Museum has partnered with Mystery Manila to create a puzzle game within the app that users can play when in the museum. Using clues in the app and in the exhibits, players get to be detectives tasked to solve a challenging mystery within the app. For the first in-app game, users get to travel in time through the Dioramas to locate a missing time-traveling historian. With this game, visitors get to interact with the exhibits in a more playful way, making their experience one that will be hard to forget.

With the launch of its Virtual Reality Rizal experience last year, Ayala Museum has made it known that it is not afraid to use technology to create new and exciting museum experiences. The launch of the app is just another way the museum recognizes the importance of the digital experience in enhancing the traditional features of the museum.

Whether you are at home or too far away to visit the museum, the Ayala Museum app gives you an experience of art & culture that fits comfortably in your pocket.
The Ayala Museum App is now available on the App Store and the Google Play Store.

*The Ayala Museum is open from 9AM-6PM, Tuesday-Sunday.

WWF-Philippines Opens Exhibit with Visual Art Ambassadors

Five top visual artists join World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Philippines as art ambassadors to support its biodiversity conservation efforts. For their very first project, BenCab, Elmer Borlongan, Geraldine Javier, Mark O. Justiniani, and José Santos III created limited-edition sculptures, inspired by the organization’s iconic panda logo.  Done in collaboration with Tin-aw Art Management Inc. and Secret Fresh, the show is the initial project of “Art, Heart, Earth,” a WWF-Philippines campaign to work with the cultural sector.

WWF-Philippines President and CEO Joel Palma says, “The Philippines is one of the 17 mega-diverse countries in the world, home to more than half of the world’s species.  We are very excited to have five of the nation’s top artists join our battle to conserve nature in the face of climate change.  We hope that through art, we continue to raise awareness on the urgent need to step up environmental action to protect earth’s biodiversity.”

Living in harmony with nature, man’s role in conservation and the concept of sustainability and home were just some of the themes explored in the pieces created for the collection.  BenCab’s “Kapit-Bisig” and Borlongan’s “Wildlife Rehabilitator” highlight the importance of man living in consonance with nature.  Justiniani’s “Kugos” (Carry) presents a caretaker donning a suit in the panda’s likeness to care for and protect the orphans of the species. Santos’ idea of saving and salvaging materials through his art is reflected in his piece titled “Natural Selection” while Javier’s work entitled “Home” is inspired by her community in the province, stressing the importance of a sustainable environment.

Though they had different approaches in creating their pieces for the collection, WWF’s Art Ambassadors are united in their call for people to save the environment. Borlongan shared that his particular concern is the destruction of our oceans. Living 10 minutes away from the West Philippine Sea, he has been a witness to how acts like dynamite fishing can harm both the environment and fisherfolk who have lost limbs due to this practice; and has already created art pieces tackling this issue.

Both BenCab and Javier shared that plastic waste is among their most urgent concerns. They stressed the importance of setting a good example when it comes to conservation.

“We have to have discipline in cleaning up our surroundings and planting trees,” said BenCab. He shared that among one of his contributions is in his museum in Baguio, where he has planted many indigenous trees in the area.

Meanwhile, Javier has started planting vegetables in her home to help provide food and additional income for the community living near her. She also tries to instill practices in her household that will lessen plastic consumption such as bringing reusable containers, baskets or eco-bags when she goes shopping or does her groceries at the market.

Santos shared that he sees parallels in his work and that of WWF-Philippines. He makes his pieces from discarded materials turning them into something that is meaningful.  “I view this process as saving and salvaging these materials from their eventual death or uselessness. And this is where I see a certain parallel with the concerns of WWF in saving nature, saving wildlife, and saving the world as a more general concern,” he shared.

Justiniani posed, “If you think about the world, it will survive… so the environmental issue is actually a human issue. If we don’t take care of it, we will lose ourselves. We know we need to take care of the environment because that is our future, the future of human beings.”
At the end of it all, WWF-Philippines’ Art Ambassadors hope that their pieces provoke questions and discourse among viewers on environmental issues.

The WWF-Philippines Art Ambassadors’ exhibition opens to the public on April 24 and runs until May 6, at Ronac Lifestyle Center, Magallanes.  To know more about WWF-Philippines and the “Art, Heart, Earth” project, you may visit https://www.facebook.com/WWF.Philippines/.

This Summer, Don’t Let Your Electricity Bill Soar

The heat is on as we get ready for another scorching hot summer with beach outings, ice cream desserts and movie dates. But for days spent at home, summer means our air conditioners will be working longer and harder to keep us cool and comfortable. To manage your electricity bill, try these smart energy saving tips from Electrolux.

1. Maximize natural light

The sun might be extra hot during summer, but without rain clouds covering the sky, it also provides light that you can use to your advantage. Arrange your space to let the light in – keep your windows unblocked, use mirrors to reflect light to strategic places and use light-colored fabrics on your pillows and upholstery. You don’t need light fixtures in every corner of your house to keep it bright and colorful this summer.

2. Unplug and get rid of phantom load
Unplugging electrical devices is an easy yet effective way to reduce energy consumption. Leaving appliances plugged in after turning them off causes them to switch to standby mode, which still uses electricity. This is called “phantom load” and can cost you up to PHP 270 per kilowatt hour a month according to the Department of Energy. By simply remembering to turn off and unplug your appliances, you can save a significant amount of money and electricity.

3. Set a timer

Keeping your home cool and comfy can be difficult during the summer, so air conditioners are a must. But this doesn’t mean that your electricity bill has to suffer. Air conditioner timers are a convenient way to save energy. Set your air conditioner timer to turn on and off at times of your choosing to maximize its cooling effect and minimize energy consumption.

4. Condition your air conditioner

Air conditioners rarely run at peak efficiency due to improper maintenance. Make cleaning your air conditioner a routine to keep it in pristine condition. Easy maintenance such as cleaning the air filters once every two months keeps your air conditioning unit from clogging up and blocking all that cool air. Have your air conditioner checked by a technician at least once a year to ensure it continues to operate at optimal levels. Electrolux’s Customer Care Hotline is open weekdays from 9 AM to 5 PM to help you keep your appliances running smoothly. Call 1-800-10-845-CARE (2273) or email wecare@electrolux.com for any questions or inquiries.

5. Switch to inverter technology

Inverter technology allows appliances to be more powerful while being more energy efficient at the same time. Inverter air conditioners use environment-friendly refrigerants and regulate temperature while minimizing energy consumption and noise. Electrolux’s Vita Inverter Split Type Air Conditioner is easy to use and keeps your home cool and clean by being eco-friendly and energy efficient. It chills the room quickly with its Turbo Function which enables it to reach the preset temperature in the shortest amount of time. It also clears dust particles and bacteria-causing elements in the air with its Active Plasma and HD Filter. The Vita Air Conditioner also comes with a user-friendly remote control and has a self-diagnose function that makes it convenient to identify and fix issues so maintenance won’t be an issue.
