Three years ago, a friend offered us to adopt one of their puppies. Me and my daughter got so excited that made us rushed to the pet shop and did some shopping. It was actually our first time to open our house to a four-legged new family member. The first night was a breeze, super fun and thrilled having him (Oppa). Unfortunately, we got scared of the dog’s aggressive behavior. It gave us a fright thinking that it might bite us. The 4th day, with a broken heart, we decided to return the puppy to my friend. We thought that having a pet was as easy as counting 1,2,3...but it was not. We have learned that we also need to be emotionally ready and mature enough to handle their ways. It's no difference with having a new born kid, they also need our understanding. With saddened heart, letting go of Oppa made us realized things. One of which is being ready for new big things.

After a year, my husband surprised us with a new dog, this time he was really hands on to our new one. At first my me and my daughter was hesitant to touch her or play with her because she's a bigger breed than our 1st puppy. We discovered that she might be quite a huge dog but she has a sweet heart (so lambing). Always wants to stay closed to her, petting her, giving her bath and all. Queen Hadassah is now on her 3rd year with us.
Last year, we welcomed another fur baby, a smaller breed to fit our lifestyle. We named her "Princess Snow White". It has been my dream to own a white furry pet. It just happened days before I turned 45, a sweet pure white MalShi (Maltese Shih Tzu) arrived at our doorstep as a birthday gift to me. I never thought it could come to reality. Because aside from the fear of getting bites from the dogs, I also have this fear of death (losing loved ones). Two reasons why I never had a chance to take care of pets at my early age. But things have changed and we get to outgrown our fears. Now, I accept and look forward to just spending time with our fur babies. Their being being playful and active also helps up stay fit. We walk them outside and play with them most of the time.
I could say that we are now a Certified Fur Parents! With some sleepless nights when they're not in their good shape. Plus unplanned veterinarian visits for their emergency and unexpected medical supplies. Things like that, and yet they still bring joy in our lives. They're so excited seeing any of the family members who has been away for even just an hour or two. Watching the cute tails waging when they see you going near them. They welcome you without judgement from their beautiful eyes! They give you unlimited kisses. They play with you until you get tired before them. Those things are priceless.
Did you know that Philippines has one of the highest dog populations in the world with 11.6 million as of 2020? Furthermore, the Philippines have the highest rate of pet ownership among the Southeast Asian countries at 83%, led by dogs at 67%. In the course of the pandemic alone, Filipinos’ interest in owning pets grew 88% compared to 2019.
With the continuous growth of the pet industry, a big chunk of this is limited to grooming, nutrition, and the like. Pet owners are constantly challenged financially in order to provide for the medical needs of their fur babies given the limited option for health care.
With this concern, was born. A micro-insurance product especially made for fur babies. It is designed to serve as a welcome respite for dog-owners saddled with large veterinary bills for checkups, procedures, and medical emergencies. Isn’t that a relief for us, fur parents?
“ With responsible pet ownership in mind, Cebuana Lhuillier is proud to introduce a product that’s both accessible and affordable for many of our kababayans who would like to provide their pet dogs with the best care possible, regardless of breed. This highlights our company’s commitment to providing the most relevant and reasonable-priced financial products that respond according to their needs,” Cebuana Lhuillier and CEO, Jean Henri Lhuillier said.
I must admit, I’ve overcome the fear of dogs. I used to just like them from a far. Now, I play, cuddle and feed them with tender loving care. We can’t deny that dogs provide much-needed companionship, comfort, and happiness in the everyday lives of their owners.
This unmistakable bond between pet and owner was further amplified by the more than two years of isolation among Pinoys, especially in the midst of the pandemic. In turn, pet owners are known to only provide the utmost love and care to these pets, whether in the form of pet food and accessories, veterinary consultation, and medicine. But that’s not it.
“ Part of responsible pet ownership is addressing their physical, social, emotional, and mental well-being for the remainder of the pet’s life. Our pet insurance aims to cover the risks that involved in owning dogs, not just to protect them but to protect pet owners as well.” Jonathan Batangan, First Vide President and Group Head Cebuana Lhullier Insurance Brokers, Inc. added.
