Bayanihan for WellBeing invites all families to join the Philippines’ first-ever Filipino Family WellBeing Virtual Conference

The Bayanihan for WellBeing Initiative led by Unilab Foundation, Inc., is bringing us the first-ever Filipino Family WellBeing Virtual Conference happening on February 12 and 13.

With the theme “Pagsulong ng Pamilyang Pilipino sa Panahon ng Pagbabago”, the virtual conference is set to open and steer a discussion that offers various perspectives on family wellbeing.

Challenges of the Filipino Family

In 2020, Filipino families went through various challenges brought about by the pandemic and natural calamities, creating drastic changes in family dynamics, such as financial and economic concerns. According to the Asian Development Bank (ADB), 73.5% of Filipino households had at least one member of the family experience job loss or workload reduction. This resulted to financial instability, with 85% of households experiencing financial difficulty during the pandemic.

In terms of psychological impact, a study entitled “Psychological impact of COVID-19 pandemic in the Philippines (Tee, 2020)” showed that a significant percentage, ranging from 13% to almost 17% of respondents have rated the psychological impact of the pandemic, its effects on depressive symptoms and anxiety levels to be moderate to severe. Meanwhile, the National Center for Mental Health (NCMH) noted a significant increase in monthly calls from 80 pre-lockdown to nearly 400 during the quarantine.

Meanwhile, among the unprecedented social concerns that surfaced during the lockdown is families worrying over their children’s education when schools shifted to online, remote, or distance learning. Children who would normally play outside are required to stay within their homes and adults who have shifted to working from home now had to balance household and career responsibilities, according to a 2020 report by the Humanitarian and Social Research Center (INSAMER).

Role of Family Wellbeing

Family wellbeing is central to addressing issues associated with these challenges. The National Center on Parent, Family, and Community Engagement (NCPFCE) defines family wellbeing simply as the “safety, health, and financial security of the whole family”, which encompasses both physical and mental health.

The vision of the Bayanihan for WellBeing (BWB) Initiative is for mental health and family wellbeing to be holistic, inclusive, and empowering, targeting particularly families in the Pantawid ng Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) to join the discussion. The BWB Collaborative is led by Unilab Foundation, Inc. through its Heads Up PH program with the support of the Philippine Psychiatric Association, Psychological Association of the Philippines, Philippine Guidance and Counseling Association, and Philippine Society for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

Executive Director of Unilab Foundation Lilibeth Aristorenas shared, “Months long after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, many Filipinos still experience the effects of social confinement, financial disruptions, and burdens of work-life integration. Amplified by different crises in the past year, these stressors continue to debilitate the youth, families, and communities from maximizing their daily life activities. “

“It is in uncertain times like this that mental health and wellbeing must be put at the forefront to address these stresses. Forming healthy familial relationships do not only help the youth cope with the effects of crises but are also essential helping them feel love and security, which impacts their brain development and sense of self and helps them grow up to become confident and resilient individuals,” added Aristorenas.

The 2-day conference will have three sessions that will be delving into different aspects of Filipino family wellbeing, raise awareness on its value and impact on the mental health of the family, which can hopefully build meaningful partnerships and cultivate a culture of family wellbeing promotion.

To kick-off the conference, a panel discussion on the challenges and strengths of the Filipino family during the pandemic will take place on February 12 at 9 AM.

The second session will take place on February 13 at 9 AM and will tackle how to provide a more active role in addressing family wellbeing through a panel discussion as well as activity-based target group sessions.

Lastly, the third session will happen on February 13 at 4 PM featuring a discussion of different types of Filipino families and their stories from young couples and single parents to OFWs to conclude the conference.

The Filipino Family WellBeing Conference is completely free and open to all from medical and health professionals and development workers to educators, parents, and the youth. To join the event, you can register at bit.ly/FFWC2021RegForm and watch the livestream at the Bayanihan for WellBeing Facebook page at facebook.com/BayanihanForWellBeing.

You can also support the event by donating a Bayanihan for WellBeing Resiliency Play Bag, which is composed of: (1) Toys like sipa and kickball, which are intended to help children release tension; (2) Cape and mask which they could design, allowing them to identify their strengths and make them feel like Superheroes; and (3) Writing and coloring sheets to encourage their creativity and help them express their emotions.

For as little as Php250 / $5.00, you can help raise a resilient child by providing them with materials to help them express themselves and develop coping strategies. Donations can be done via bank deposit with the details below:

Unilab Foundation, Inc. – BPI Mandaluyong – Account number 0181-0489-72 (Swift code: BOPIPHM). Please send a photo of your deposit slip to: headsup@unilabfoundation.org.

More Filipino consumers are eating healthier in the new normal, open to plant-based/meatless food – Herbalife Nutrition survey

MANILA, Philippines, January 26, 2021 – Premier global nutrition company, Herbalife Nutrition, recently released findings from the 2020 Diet Decisions Survey, which revealed that Filipino consumers are eating better. Among those polled, 53% said they have started eating more fruits and vegetables and 43% ate more plant-based food. Among the 11 Asia Pacific markets surveyed, the Philippines also ranked highest (62%) in their openness to plant-based foods/meatless options.

The survey, which polled 8,000 consumers in eight Asia Pacific markets, including Australia, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, South Korea, Taiwan and Vietnam, also shed light into the motivations behind the consumers’ recent dietary and lifestyle changes, with the aim of inspiring more people to adopt better nutrition and lifestyle habits to improve their overall well-being now and into the future.

“These results are a good sign that Filipinos are becoming more mindful about their personal health. Making healthier food choices and becoming more open to plant-based and meatless options and staying physically active — these are great ways to start combating obesity, which has been rising worldwide,” said Dr. Rocio Medina, Vice Chairwoman and Member, Nutrition Advisory Board, Herbalife Nutrition.

Dr. Medina spoke about “Reversing Obesity Among Filipinos” during the Virtual Wellness Tour of Herbalife Nutrition Philippines. The monthly event is part of Herbalife Nutrition’s continuing efforts and commitment to raise public awareness on the importance of balanced nutrition and having a healthy active lifestyle.

“Obesity is recognized by leading health organizations, including the American Medical Association and the World Health Organization (WHO), as a chronic disease. It is associated with decreased life expectancy and co-morbidities and requires a long and comprehensive management approach to help people,” Dr. Medina pointed out. She added that the WHO has even declared obesity as the as the largest global health pandemic in adults and is becoming a more serious problem than malnutrition.

Citing figures from the Department of Science and Technology - Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI), Dr. Medina said that one of three adults in the Philippines is obese and this trend has been increasing over time. A high prevalence of young adult obesity occurs across the country, with most obese young adults to be found in Luzon.

Reversing obesity

According to Dr. Medina, there are three factors that can help improve body composition:

o   Increasing one’s intake of high biological value protein, like isolated soy protein, egg white, beef protein, fish, poultry, and whey

o   Decreasing one’s consumption of simple carbohydrates such as white bread, white sugar, and white rice.

o   Increasing one’s physical activity like doing strength training for 2 to 3 times a week and resistance aerobic training for 3 to 4 times a week.

She also advised cutting down on added sugars.

“Choosing a healthy eating pattern low in added sugars can have important health benefits,” Dr. Medina said.

Top motivators for eating healthier

According to the 2020 Diet Decisions Survey, 58% of the Filipino respondents have made a major change to their diet during the pandemic and 89% agreed that they had a specific moment during the pandemic when they realized they needed to change their diet. Among their top motivators include:

o   Their health (82%)

o   Weight loss (51%)

o   More cost-effective (27%)

Beyond making changes to their diet, 56% also started to exercise more, with consumers in Vietnam, Philippines and Indonesia leading the way.

Filipino consumers believe they will emerge healthier from the pandemic

According to the survey findings, 77% believe that they would emerge from the pandemic healthier than they were before and 88% claimed they already noticed a positive difference in their health since they changed their diet. Majority (83%) said they plan to keep the dietary changes that they made for a prolonged period of time.

To help maintain their new diets in the new normal, Filipino consumers said having the following could help:

o   Easy-to-follow meal plans (62%)

o   Convenient alternatives that don’t take long to make (45%)

o   A health and wellness coach (40%)

When it comes to meal plans, Dr. Medina said that a reduced calorie meal plan should be individualized. It should be selected to reflect the person’s personal and cultural preferences.

She likewise added that behavior coaching can also make a difference in improving one’s habits.

“For many people, targeted behavior coaching, which transforms their eating, exercise, and other habits, known as intensive lifestyle intervention, can make a difference,” Dr. Medina said.

Concluding, Dr. Medina underlined the importance of nutrition education.

“Having education in an area helps people think, feel, and behave in a way that contributes to their success, and improves not only their personal satisfaction but also their community,” she said.

World Vision and its Partners continue in their legacy of changing the lives of the most vulnerable children

As the Philippines welcomed another year, most Filipinos are anxious to see what the future holds. With everything the country experienced last 2020, a lot of people are doing their best to make the coming year different. Some have decided to make resolutions and pursue new opportunities, but for others, it is to continue the legacy of changing lives.

World Vision, together with its partners, continues the mission of helping the most vulnerable children and their communities led by its vision of seeing thousands or even millions of kids reach fullness of life.

Through its campaign “A New Year of Firsts”, World Vision invites their sponsors to empower a child by enabling him or her to experience powerful and life-changing moments of firsts such as, for the first time a family could eat until they were full, a village could have clean water, a child could have all she needs to continue going to school, and a child could feel safe and protected.

First Bountiful Harvest

For 14-year-old Karie, life was a series of hunger and fear of starvation – made worse with the onslaught of COVID-19. Yet, it was during this period that Karie and her family experienced a miracle she never imagined possible.

For the first time ever, she could wake up without worrying if there was enough food to eat. On the contrary, they had enough food to last them through the endless days of lockdown, even after the pandemic stripped the family of their only source of income.

With the seeds World Vision provided them and with training in sustainable farming techniques, for the first time, Karie’s backyard was home to a flourishing vegetable garden – a gift that could change her life for good.

The Legacy of Firsts

World Vision Philippines has been helping children and their families out of poverty worldwide for over 60 years. With child sponsorship, children and their communities receive an opportunity for a better future.

“You don’t have to be rich to sponsor a child. All you need is the desire to be a bearer of hope”, shared Mae, a child sponsor through World Vision for 10 years.

Child sponsorship is not only making a difference in the lives of World Vision assisted communities, but is also transforming their donors as they experience a series of beautiful firsts with their sponsored children.

“We are deeply grateful to all our partners for reaching out to the most vulnerable children. God first loved us so we are able show kindness to others. This year, may we be encouraged to help transform the lives of children and their families through child sponsorship”, said World Vision National Director Rommel V. Fuerte.

How Poor Sleep Promotes Weight Gain

David Heber, M.D., PhD, FACP, FASN;  Chairman, Herbalife Nutrition Institute

While the world is beginning to understand the importance of sleep for our oveall wellbeing, it is often forgotten when we talk about nutrition, exercise, and behavior strategies for achieving and maintaining a healthy body weight and best personal shape. As a physician and Founding Director of the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition, I have studied the importance getting enough good quality sleep for successful weight management and overall health.  While there are many ways to promote getting to sleep, the best quality sleep occurs when the body adjusts naturally to consistent daily timing of meals, exercise, and relaxation. It is also important to practice good sleep hygiene which includes, not eating three hours before bed; shutting down work two hours before bed; and saying goodnight to your screens one hour before bed including smartphones, computers, and other digital devices which emit light into the eyes to throw off your biological clock.

Poor sleep is associated with high blood pressure, a weakened immune system, weight gain, mood swings, paranoia, depression and a higher risk of diabetes, stroke, and dementia. Research also shows that a third of Americans experience periods of insomnia, and one in ten experience three sleepless nights a week for months on end. Sleeplessness not only impacts our health, it is also responsible for an estimated $63 billion in lost productivity every year in the U.S.

Why does sleep matter? When our body clock is thrown off balance, we end up with increased hunger and appetite. Recent epidemiological and laboratory evidence confirm previous findings of an association between sleep loss and increased risk of obesity. When we don’t get enough sleep, our bodies release more ghrelin, a hormone made by the stomach cells that increases appetite. As an example, overnight airplane flights from West to East are particularly disruptive and increased craving and eating in the next day often follows to relieve the fatigue secondary to poor sleep on the airplane. Stress from too little sleep can build up and cause more cortisol, a stress hormone, to enter the blood stream from the adrenal glands leading to fatigue and poor thinking ability. Studies have also shown that higher cortisol levels lead to an increase in abdominal fat deposits.

Sound Advice for Sound Sleep

Now that we understand that good sleep is critical to our mind and body, what are some natural ways to help our body become “sleep ready?” Just like small children thrive on bedtime rituals, so do adults. If you are like the millions of people that go to bed with their cell phone or fall asleep in front of the TV, you may be aware that those practices are poor sleep hygiene.

Eat Smart, Snack Smart: While there is a lot of buzz about intermittent dieting, the facts are based on some long-term sound advice. Stop eating and snacking at least three hours before bedtime. This allows for proper digestion and helps you avoid heartburn that can keep you awake at night.

Stop Working: Not only should you not be working as you prepare for sleep, follow the digital detox rule of no computers or digital readers at least one hour before bedtime– that means TV too!

Make Exercise the Norm: Exercise has numerous critical health benefits – but it also helps your body relax into sleep. The best exercise is during the morning and a great jumpstart to the day.

Take a Sleep Check: A lot of smart watches can now help to monitor sleep functions, heart rates and even let you know when you wake up in middle night– learn how well you are sleeping versus guessing.

De-Stress: Deep breathing, relaxing stretches, mindful meditation – take time to let your mind and body unwind before you try to catch your zzz’s.

Keep on Schedule: While life can often wreak havoc with sleep times, make every effort to go to sleep and wake up at the same time each day. This creates a sleep rhythm that your body will thank you for.

Eat Breakfast: So much has been said about the benefits of breakfast. When you sleep, you’re actually fasting, so when you wake up you need to restore proteins to start your day.

Collectively, nutrition, exercise and sleep promote better health, and while they won’t take away the stressful situations, they can help you better manage stress levels and achieve better overall wellbeing.
