REP Theater : The timeless story of Beauty and the Beast for Young Audiences

The magic of storytelling goes on as REP Theater for Young Audiences (RTYA) stages a retelling of the classic tale Beauty and the Beast with book written by Peter Del Valle and John Ahearn, music by Michael Valenti, and lyrics by Elsa Rael.

The spellbinding musical highlights RTYA’s 25th anniversary with Founder and Artistic Director Joy Virata at the helm, promising to give children an even more enjoyable theater experience.

Based on the French novel of the same title published in 1740, this version of Beauty and the Beast follows a loving father who wanders into an enchanted garden as he tries to take shelter from the storm. A bush of strangely beautiful roses catches his attention, and having promised that he would bring one home for his youngest daughter Beauty, he decides to pick a rose from the bush.

Without knowing the roses are magical, the father angers the Beast who owns the garden. As punishment, the Beast demands that Beauty be sent to his castle to serve as payment for the enchanted rose that he stole. In exchange for her father’s freedom, Beauty agrees to live with the Beast not knowing that her captor is under a spell, which can only be broken by true love.

This rendition of Beauty and the Beast will show children the wonders of learning to love beyond appearances and the true meaning of selflessness.

RTYA’s Beauty and the Beast brings together some of the most talented theater stars today including Cara Barredo, Alana Vicente, Jill Ita-as, and Maya Encilla alternating as the dutiful daughter Beauty, while Arnel Carrion, Jos Jalbuena, Hans Eckstein, and George Schulze play the role of the cursed Beast.

Directed by Joy Virata, the show runs until December 14 at the Onstage theater in Greenbelt 1, Makati City.
